Alternatives to VOX Music Player

VOX Premium is $49.99 a year and the free tier has ads. What to move to depends on whether you are leaving over the price, the ads, or the hi-res.

VOX Premium is $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year, and the free tier carries ads. People leave for one of three reasons, and the right replacement is different for each.

  • Leaving over the price or the ads → Refrain, free with neither.
  • Leaving but you still need hi-res → Flacbox.
  • Leaving but you still need cloud storage → Evermusic or Plexamp.

Leaving over the price: Refrain

Free with no in-app purchases and no advertising anywhere in it. Plays MP3, M4A, AAC, WAV, FLAC and AIFF from the device.

It is not trying to be VOX. There is no cloud, no SoundCloud or Spotify, no internet radio. What it does instead is the library work: batch-set artist, album and cover art across any selection of tracks, drag files across from a computer's browser over Wi-Fi, synced .lrc lyrics with a full-screen presentation mode, eight visualizers, a ten-band equalizer running 32 Hz to 16 kHz.

What you lose: hi-res claims, cloud sync, multi-device, streaming services, radio, CarPlay.

The full comparison.

Leaving but you need hi-res: Flacbox

Built for the audiophile end — hi-res playback, DSP, DSD and APE support, cloud and media server connections. $19.99 a year or $59.99 once, which is materially cheaper than VOX's $49.99 a year if you were paying annually.

Honest note: if hi-res is genuinely why you are there, do not switch to a free local player and expect the same thing. Refrain plays FLAC and WAV correctly but makes no bit-perfect or hi-res claims, and pretending otherwise would waste your time.

Leaving but you need the cloud: Evermusic or Plexamp

Evermusic — 30+ cloud services plus Plex, Subsonic, Navidrome, Jellyfin and Emby. $19.99/year or $59.99 lifetime. The closest structural replacement for VOX Music Cloud.

Plexamp — better player, more setup. Needs a Plex Media Server you run. Offline caching is behind Plex Pass at $7/month or $70/year; the lifetime licence went to $750 on 1 July 2026.

Before you cancel

Get your files out of VOX Music Cloud first, onto a computer, and check they are all there. A lapsed subscription is a bad time to discover that the only copy of something was in a cloud you no longer have access to.

Then import into whatever you have chosen. For Refrain: Add → Choose a folder, or drag them across with Wi-Fi transfer. If your library is mostly 24-bit WAV, consider putting compressed copies on the phone and keeping masters on a drive — the arithmetic.
