Common questions

How do I get music into Refrain?

Four ways, all under the Add button in your library. Choose files from the Files app, iCloud Drive, Dropbox or anywhere with a share sheet. Choose a folder to import everything in it. Browse a folder and pick individual tracks. Or receive over Wi-Fi — Refrain shows an address and a code, you open that address in a browser on your Mac or PC, and drag files onto the page. Both devices need to be on the same network and the screen has to stay open while it transfers.

Refrain does not download music for you. It plays files you already have. If you make songs on Suno or anywhere else, download them there the normal way and bring them in.

What formats does it play?

MP3, M4A, AAC, WAV, FLAC and AIFF. It reads the title, artist, album and cover art out of the file's own tags where they are present.

How do I get lyrics to show up?

Put the .lrc or .srt file in alongside the song with the same filename and import them together — Refrain pairs them automatically. Lyrics already embedded in the track are read directly. Timed lyrics from TuneMason export as .lrc and work as-is.

I edited a song's title, but re-importing brought the old one back.

That is expected. Editing changes what your library displays; it does not rewrite the audio file, so the file still carries its original tags. This is deliberate — your originals are never modified.

Can I edit several songs at once?

Yes. Tap Edit in your library, tick the songs, then tap Edit in the toolbar. The artist, album and cover art apply to everything selected. Titles are one song at a time, since fifty tracks rarely share one.

The AI DJ said something odd.

If an announcement lands strangely, tell us what it said — that is genuinely the most useful bug report we get. You can switch the DJ off at any time in Settings.

Do I have to pay for the AI DJ?

No. The built-in voice works offline and costs nothing. The cloud voices are optional and bring-your-own-key: you supply an OpenAI, Google Gemini or ElevenLabs key, you are billed by them directly, and Refrain takes nothing and holds no credentials of its own.

Where did my music go after I reinstalled?

Your library lives on the device. If you deleted the app, imported files went with it. Keep your originals somewhere else — a Mac, a drive, a cloud folder — and treat Refrain as the player rather than the only copy.

Does it work offline?

Entirely. There is no account, nothing to sign in to, and no network request of any kind unless you turn on a cloud DJ voice.

Is there an Android version, or CarPlay?

Not yet.

Longer answers

The questions above are the short versions. Each one has a fuller write-up with the steps, the failure cases and what the app deliberately does not do.

Reporting a problem

Include the app version, shown at the bottom of Settings, and what you were doing when it happened. If it involves a specific file, say what format it is and where it came from — most playback problems come down to how a particular file was tagged.
