VLC vs Refrain for music

VLC plays anything and organises nothing. Refrain plays six audio formats and gives you a real library. For music specifically, that trade usually favours the library.

VLC is a video player that also plays audio, and it plays essentially every format that has ever existed. It is free, open source, has no ads and no account. What it does not have is a music library — browsing by artist and album, playlists you would want to use, synced lyrics, or any way to fix a track that arrived with the wrong name.

For playing one file, VLC is fine and always has been. For a music collection you return to, it is the wrong shape.

Where Refrain wins

It is a library, not a file list. Browse by artist and by album, search the lot, build playlists, see cover art. VLC shows you what amounts to a directory.

You can fix what arrived wrong. A folder of downloads with your username as the artist and no album is unusable in VLC and a two-minute job in Refrain.

Synced lyrics. VLC has no concept of them for music, and presentation mode has no equivalent anywhere.

It feels like a music app, because it is one. Now Playing artwork, a mini player, visualizers, lock screen controls that behave.

When VLC is the better pick

You need to play a format Refrain doesn't. OGG, OPUS, WMA, APE, DSD, anything obscure. VLC plays it, and this is genuinely VLC's whole reputation.

You want video too. Refrain has no video at all.

You are playing one file, once. Someone sent you an audio message, a rehearsal recording, a rip of something odd — VLC opens it without ceremony and you move on.

You want open source. VLC's source is public and audited. Refrain's is not.

Moving your library across

Nothing to migrate — both play files you already have. Import your folder into Refrain with Add → Choose a folder.

Both apps offer a Wi-Fi drop, so the transfer habit is the same. Refrain's shows an address and a code and imports what you drag onto the page; the guide covers the network cases that trip it up.

Convert anything Refrain does not play before you start, because it will simply not appear.
